Vacant Store Fronts Turn Into Works of Art

New Haven is looking for artists to create window art in the city, as well as entrepreneurs to turn vacant shops into thriving sites in the community.

The window art program, VIEWseum: Look, Learn, Shop, is run through Project Storefronts, which transforms vacant storefronts into thriving shops, in turn helping other nearby businesses.

VIEWseum: Look, Learn, Shop! is giving artists the opportunity to create and show off their creativity at a Project Storefronts window. Selected artists will also get a chance to host public workshops and sell their wares at pop-up shop.

“I am very excited about our new sister program. It is the perfect complement to Project Storefronts,” Vivian Nabeta, director of the Department of Arts, Culture and Tourism in New Haven, said in a news release. “The city is devoted to promoting the work of artists in our community and the VIEWseum program gives artists another venue to showcase their work,” she added.

All artists who want to apply for Project Storefronts or VIEWseum can find the application on the New Haven Festivals, Inc. Web site.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but artists should note the following application schedule: For Summer application, deadlines are April-May, Fall deadlines are July-August and Winter deadlines are October-November.
