Norwich Father, Son Rescued at Vermont Ski Resort

Police say a 50-year-old Norwich man and his 11-year-old son are safe and sound after skiing off a trail at a Vermont resort and later being rescued late Saturday night.

Vermont State police say Scott Barbarossa of Norwich, called 911 at 2 p.m. Saturday to report that he and his son were lost after skiing off a trail at Pico Mountain, which is part of the Killington Resort.

"Somehow we slid off the back of the ridge," Barbarossa said Monday.

Barbarossa made one call to police before the battery on his cell phone died.

"I was scared when he first started to call the police," Zac Barbarossa said of his father's 911 call.

"We hiked about an hour and a half non-stop and there was thre foot of snow on the ground.  We were carrying skis.  It was a workout," Scott Barbarossa said.

The father and son decided they could not walk anymore, so they stopped and built a small snow enclosure to protect them from the elements.

"I told my son we would get out of there," Barbarossa said.  " I just told my son this isn't terrible.  I didn't want him to get worked up.  I said we're going to build a hut and stay here tonight."

A state police search-and-rescue team, game wardens, the Killington ski patrol and a Killington search-and-rescue team searched the area before finding the father and son shortly after 10 p.m.
