A vigil will be held on Monday night for a Manchester High School freshman who drowned on Wednesday in the school pool during a swim class.
The fire department responded at 10:21 a.m. and found school staff and the resource officer performing CPR on Malvrick Donkor.
Thayer Redman, the swim teacher, saw the teen under water and called for emergency medical help, officials said last week. Redman has been placed on paid leave.
Malvrick was unconscious when he was brought to Manchester Memorial Hospital and later died, according to school officials. The medical examiner has ruled his death an accidental drowning.
A vigil will be held at 5 p.m. on Monday, according to a letter from Principal Matt Geary posted on the school's student Web site.
The vigil will begin in the freshman center parking lot and continue to the high school cafeteria. Parents and guardians are invited to attend.
An investigation is underway. The pool is closed until further notice and the swimming unit has been removed from the physical education curriculum indefinitely.
The Journal Inquirer reports that lawyer Carlton Hume has been hired by Donkor's family, which is originally from Ghana. Hume said a lawsuit is probable.
Interim Schools Superintendent Richard Kisiel said on Monday that Hume has not contacted him.
Malvrick's family moved from Ghana to Connecticut in march.
Hume also represents the mother of an East Hartford High School student, also from Ghana, who drowned in a pool at the school in January. Hume did not immediately return a call from the Associated press on Monday seeking more information.
Marcum Asiamah, the East Hartford High School student,
died of asphyxia due to submersion in January
. He drowned during a physical education class on Jan. 11.
