Voters Support Seat Belts on Buses: Poll

Almost two weeks ago, a promising teen from Rocky Hill was killed in a tragic crash when the school bus taking him and other students to a robotics competition went down an embankment in Hartford.

Soon after the disaster, debate began over whether the state should have a law requiring school buses to have seatbelts and State Rep. Antonio Guerrera, D-Rocky Hill, submitted legislation that would force new school buses be equipped with seat belts, possibly, that all school districts’ fleets be retrofitted.

Quinnipiac University pollsters posed the question to Connecticut voters, and most said they would support the legislation, 73 to 20 percent, and parents of public school students support the measure, 73 to 22 percent.

About 500,000 children ride on Connecticut school buses each day.
