Cops Find Suspect of Wallingford Hit-and-Run

Alexander Vargas, 36, was walking south on Route 150 in Wallingford around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday when someone driving a black car hit him and took off, investigators said.

Police said tips led them to the car and driver Thursday and they are investigating.

Several people from a nearby business heard the crash Wednesday and ran to help, pulling Vargas out of the roadway and into the grass alongside the street.

For two and a half hours, police closed part of the road to investigate.

"It’s good they called us right away and that they got the man to safety," said Lt. Bob Flis, of the Wallingford Police Department said.

Vargas, of Meriden, is hospitalized with what police describe as significant injuries.

People in the area say plenty of people exercise on South Broad Street despite the traffic and one avid runner warned pedestrians to walk or run facing the traffic.

"You should run against the traffic so you can see everything that’s going on," said Lisa Culmone of Wallingford.
