Water Main Break Causes Huge Sinkhole in New Britain

Crews have been working for hours in the cold after a water main break caused a huge sinkhole on Chestnut Street in New Britain Thursday.

Early Thursday morning water poured out from the broken water main, flooding the road.

“That's pretty wild it's almost like an earthquake or something,” said New Britain resident John Howard

Maria Ortiz lives at the D’Amato Apartments and said she rushed outside to move her car off the street and away from the rising water.

“It was just on the line to the door, and I just got in reverse and try to get away because I could not move forward the water was already coming out,” she told NBC Connecticut.

Mayor Erin Stewart said the broken pipe is a 16-inch water main and caused multiple sinkholes.

Crews worked through the day and night to make repairs, shutting off water to nearby buildings for a short time.

The city hired private contractors to bring in large excavators to big up the road.

The mayor said they hope to have the road reopened by Friday afternoon.
