In New Haven, Department of Public Works crews are clearing thick, frozen solid snow banks from busy city streets and side roads and there is a weeklong parking ban in effect for the city.
A parking ban began at 9 a.m. Monday and will remain in effect until 3 p.m. Sunday while the city works on a major snow removal operation.
Residents must park on the even-numbered side of the street while the parking ban is in effect.
The city is tackling the major roads first, followed by priority snow removal sites marked with "Emergency Order No Parking" signs on the odd-numbered side of the road.
Mike Carter lives near one of the removal sites and said this project is much needed.
"It's been dangerous, especially at the intersections because of the mounds of snow. You can't really see to make safe turns," Carter said.
Emily Waligurski said the tall snow banks made getting around nearly impossible.
"It is sort of a problem," she said, "especially running, when you want to try to cross the street."
City officials said the citywide parking ban will be enforced along trash pickup routes. Additionally, trash pickup is a day behind because of the holiday.
Off-street parking is being made available throughout the city. A list is available here.
Public safety prioritized another 39 streets to ensure that first responders have access.
These streets will have parking bans on both sides on dates and will have complete posting 24 hours in advance. Find those streets here.
Officials will tag and tow vehicles that do not adhere to the parking ban.
