Women's Prison Goes Co-Ed

No co-mingling, spokesman said.

The state’s women’s prison will be getting some male inmates as officials close institutions to save money.

Gates Correctional Institution in Niantic is closing on June 1, and the 230 male prisoners who remain will be moved to York Correctional Institution in Niantic, the state’s only institution for female offenders, the Day of New London reports.

Closing the prison is expected to save $12.3 million a year. Department of Correction Commissioner Leo Arnone said.

They will stay in Niantic because several of them have clearance to work in the community and for the state Department of Transportation, Brian Garnett, state Department of Correction spokesman, told the Day.

While men and women will live in the same facility, there will be "absolutely" no commingling, he told the Day.
