Cargo Ship Grazes Bottom of Brooklyn Bridge: Coast Guard

A cargo ship heading out to sea clipped the underside of the Brooklyn Bridge, but caused no damage to the iconic span, the U.S. Coast Guard reported Saturday.

The mast of the ship, named Rainbow Quest, brushed against the bottom of the bridge at about 10:30 p.m. Friday as the vessel cruised down the East River, said Coast Guard spokesman Ali Flockerzi.

The river’s tide was high, but not at its highest point when the Rainbow Quest passed under the bridge, the New York Post reported.

The bridge had already been scheduled for a routine closure late Friday. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority inspected the span for damage during the closure.

No one was injured in the accident.
