Man Run Over by His Own Car During Carjacking, Killing Him: Police

A New York man who left his car running at a 7-Eleven store as he ran inside to collect food for a soup kitchen was run over by his own vehicle as he tried to stop a carjacker, police said.

Dionel Ramirez, 69, left his Hyundai running with the door open outside a 7-Eleven in North Bay Shore on Long Island while he went inside to pick up the food, Suffolk County police said.

He saw someone jump into his car and ran to stop him, but was run over, police said.

Ramirez, of North Amityville, was pronounced dead at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, police said.

Daughter Michelle Ramirez said her father was a proud immigrant from Guatemala who wanted to give back to those less fortunate.

"He always just wants to help people because he came from a poor country, and having all this is a blessing," she said.

"He was happy, he was just, 'I'm happy that I'm here, happy to have my family,'" she said. "I woke up and he's gone."

Michelle said she felt "baffled, lost. I didn't expect to hear this type of news after Thanksgiving."

Ramirez leaves behind two daughters and a wife.

A worker said the 7-Eleven store's surveillance cameras captured the incident, and police now have the video. Michelle Ramirez said her father's car was found in Brentwood, but the carjacker is still on the loose.

"Just give yourself in please," she said. "You already hurt one family, don't hurt another."
