Death Toll Rises to 12 in Chilean Earthquake

Chilean officials confirmed a 12th death on Thursday after a massive 8.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Chile the day before, NBC News reported.

Roughly 1 million people were evacuated from their homes. A state of emergency was declared in the region around the coastal city of Coquimbo, which the Navy said had been hit by waves up to 15 feet.

Nearly 70,000 people in and around Coquimbo lost power, according to Chilean emergency officials.

The quake sparked fears of tsunamis - with advisories put out in Hawaii and California, which were later cancelled.
