Man Vandalized Church Statues: Police

A 49-year-old man faces hate-crime charges after allegedly placing articles of clothing over the heads of religious statues in a front garden of a Catholic Church on Long Island, police said Saturday.

Victor Wilson entered the garden at Our Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Freeport just after noon Saturday, draped clothes over statues and broke one, according to police.

Investigators said officers recognized Wilson from previous arrests involving places of worship.

He was charged with first-degree aggravated harassment, a hate crime of second-degree criminal mischief and fourth-degree criminal mischief for allegedly damaging flood lights at the church on Friday.

It was not immediately clear whether Wilson had a lawyer.
