Mexico to Create New Prosecutor for Country's Disappeared

Mexican President Enrique Pena Niento promised to create a new special prosecutor for all of the country’s thousands of missing people, the Associated Press reported.

Niento made the announcement in a closed-door meeting to the families of students who disappeared in southern Mexico a year ago.

The families are demanding a new internationally supervised investigation into the disappearances of 43 students as well as an investigation into those responsible for the initial inquiry.

The students disappeared Sept. 26, 2014, in the city of Iguala. They had gone there to commandeer buses that they wanted to use to attend a commemoration in Mexico City.

A spokesperson for the president could not confirm a timeframe for when the demands would be answered.
