Prosecutors: Man Beat, Hacked Mother to Death With Knife

A judge on Wednesday denied bail for 40-year-old Dwight Brown, who was charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery for the Sunday evening attack

Prosecutors say a man beat and hacked his mother to death with a knife last weekend after she prepared dinner for him at her home in Chicago's South Side the night before her 24th wedding anniversary.

A judge on Wednesday denied bail for 40-year-old Dwight Brown, who was charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery for the Sunday evening attack, according to a proffer from Cook County prosecutors.

His mother, 60-year-old Linda Sanders, was discovered dead in a pool of blood by her husband about 8:45 a.m. Monday in the hallway of her home in the 400 block of East 48th Place, according to prosecutors and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

About 5 p.m. Sunday, Sanders’ husband left her home alone when he went to work, prosecutors said. On his way out, the husband saw Brown, who said he was there to visit his mother, the proffer said.

The husband called Sanders when he got to work, and she told him she was making dinner for Brown, who was supposed to leave after the meal, prosecutors said. Sanders never answered any of the “numerous” other phone calls from her husband overnight into Monday, prosecutors said.

Sanders’ face “was battered almost beyond recognition” when she was found in the morning, which was the couple’s 24th anniversary, prosecutors said.

An autopsy Tuesday found Sanders died of multiple blunt and sharp force injuries, according to the medical examiner’s office. Authorities described her facial injuries as “hacking” with a heavy object, prosecutors said.

Police went to Brown’s apartment Monday morning, where they found him awake lying in bed next to a bloody knife and wearing blood-soaked clothing, prosecutors said.

Sanders’ house and car keys were found in her son’s coat, and $160 in cash that the woman had saved for an anniversary celebration were found in his bloody pants, prosecutors said.

Brown, of the 6200 block of South Dorchester, is next due in court Feb. 23, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office.
