NY Zoo Welcomes 3 Baby Humboldt Penguins

Three new baby Humboldt penguins were born a few weeks ago at a Syracuse, New York, zoo, and now a contest is being held to name two of them.

One of the chicks has been named Lucia, which means “light" in Latin. She was named by county executive Joanie Mahoney, and is the 41st chick born at the the Rosamond Gifford Zoo.

The chick pictured is the 42nd chick born into the zoo family, which is home to a colony of 35 Humboldt penguins.

The zoo plans to hold an online naming contest for the 40th and 42nd chicks born once their genders are determined.

The Rosamond Gifford Zoo, accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, plays an important role in conserving Humboldt penguins, which are native to South America and are threatened in the wild.
