Study Names Best and Worst Retailers for Black Friday Deals

Major retail stores across the country will open their doors the day after Thanksgiving with special discounts and deals, but some retailers will have better deals than others this year.

The personal finance website WalletHub conducted a study of 30 of the biggest U.S. retailers based on their advertisements for Black Friday deals and named which stores shoppers can expect to find the largest discounts for certain items, such as jewelry or appliances.

JCPenney earned the top spot with an average Black Friday discount rate of 68 percent. The department store was closely followed by Kohl's (66.7 percent), Stage (63.9 percent) and Groupon (63.7 percent). JCPenney's best deals this year are in apparel and accessories, toys and appliances.

In an analysis of discounts by item type, WalletHub found that the biggest discounts are for jewelry with an average of 73 percent off those items. Jewelry was followed by books, movies and music (56 percent); apparel and accessories (50 percent); and consumer packaged goods (47 percent).

Of the 30 retailers included in the study, the ones with the worst deals are Costco (19.5 percent), Sam's Club (24.9 percent), Amazon (25.8 percent) and Big Lots (27.1 percent).
