Sudan's President, Wanted for Genocide, Invited to Summit With Trump: Saudi Officials

The president of Sudan, Omar al-Bashir — who is wanted on genocide charges by an international court — was invited to President Donald Trump's upcoming summit with the leaders of Muslim nations, NBC News reported.

Officials close to Saudi Arabia's king were cited in the initial Associated Press report. A U.S. official told NBC News that the Trump administration opposes invitations to people subject to outstanding warrants in International Criminal Court, like Bashir.

Bashir is wanted on charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes over atrocities in Darfur, but he has evaded arrest for years — a judge barred him leaving a 2015 African Union summit but he'd flown back to Sudan before the hearing.

More than 50 top dignitaries from Muslim countries across Asia, Africa and the Middle East are set to attend the Saudi-organized summit Sunday, along with Trump, who will be on his first overseas trip as president.
