A West Virginia University student who was hospitalized after being taken from a fraternity house earlier this week has died.
The news comes a day after WVU suspended social and pledging activities at its campus-affiliated fraternities and sororities. WVU Dean of Students Corey Farris said school officials halted the activities for students' well-being and safety.
Around midnight Wednesday, officers were called to the Kappa Sigma fraternity house, where they found someone performing CPR on 18-year-old Nolan Michael Burch of Williamsville, New York.
Burch had no pulse and wasn't breathing. He was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital, where he was placed in intensive care with an undisclosed medical condition.
The school announced Friday that Burch has died.
"Words cannot describe the heartache we, as a West Virginia University family, feel at the loss of one of our own -- Nolan Michael Burch -- who passed away today," said WVU President E. Gordon Gee in a statement. "The outpouring of love and support from his friends and this community has been what you would expect from Mountaineers, and I would ask that you continue to keep the Burch family and many friends in your thoughts and prayers."
Burch was a freshman majoring in pre-sport management, the university said.

Earlier this month, 19 members of another fraternity were arrested on alcohol-related charges and the fraternity was suspended.
Police are investigating both incidents.
