Anthem, one of the nation's largest health insurers, said Tuesday that the recent cyber attack on its systems may have affected 8.8 million to 18.8 million non-Anthem customers who are or were once insured by other Blue Cross Blue Shield partners, NBC News reported. Anthem provides care for people insured by a network of other independent Blue Cross and Blue Shield insurers — Empire, Independence and Blue Care of Michigan among them. If a person insured by a different company received care through Anthem, their records may have been exposed in the hack alongside records of people who are directly insured by Anthem.
