Bogus Bills: Shady Company Scams Schools in 26 States

The Better Business Bureau is warning school districts across the U.S. to be on alert for bogus invoices from an educational supplies company, after receiving thousands of inquiries and nearly 100 complaints from schools in 26 states, NBC News reported. A mysterious company called Scholastic School Supply has been sending the bogus invoices, which show an amount due of $647.50 for a bulk purchase of schoolbooks that were never ordered or received. While some school districts questioned the invoices and refused to pay, districts with poor purchasing controls are at risk of being duped. Scholastic Inc., the well-known publisher, demanded that the phony company stop using its name and trademark. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is investigating.
