Colbert Takes on Romney Ad with New Catchphrases

The much-discussed clip from an Obama campaign speech makes perfect sense, Colbert says.

Monday night was Stephen Colbert's chance to take a shot at the kerfuffle over Mitt Romney's new ad, in which he quotes Obama quoting somebody else.

The new Romney ad features a clip of Obama saying on the campaign trail in 2008, "If we keep talking about the economy, we're going to lose."

Trouble is, he was quoting someone from then-opponent Sen. John McCain's campaign when he said it — and Democrats are furious at what they say was the Romney campaign's deceptive misuse of the quote.

Colbert's take?

"That might look like an unfair edit by Romney, but later on, I will edit this so that it doesn't," Colbert said.

"Those words came out of Obama's face. Now they're his words. Just like some of my most famous quotes: 'Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.' 'Love thy neighbor as thyself.' I own it," he joked.

"Folks, I own those words now — just as surely as I own all the words in my new audiobook, 'No Apologies' by Stephen Colbert."

"No Apologies" is, of course, Romney's own book.
