As the 2013 Golden Globe show approaches, take a look back at the top hits and misses of last year's red carpet. HIT: Angelina Jolie - The woman is never a miss, and in a warm ivory Atelier Versace dress with a ruby red, one-shoulder cuff and a thigh-high slit, Golden Globes night was no exception. Not sure we loved the matching red clutch and lipstick, but it was bold. Click to see more.

HIT: Julianna Margulies - “The Good Wife” star wore a sparkly purple Naeem Khan gown that covered up her arms and her chest but showed off her well-defined back. The dress could have come off as matronly, but with her clearly fit body, big green earrings and youthful ponytail, she looked great.

HIT: Claire Danes - In black-and-white J. Mendel with the trend of the night -- a diamond-shape cut-out in the back -- Danes was elegant and assured, even before she won Best Actress in a TV Drama for her performance in "Homeland."

MISS: Jessica Chastain - The fashion press was raving about her white sleeveless Givenchy turtleneck dress, but combined with slightly bouffant hair and oversized pearl earrings, we found the overall effect a bit aging.

WireImage
HIT: Nicole Richie - Richie proved why she’ll be a worthy mentor on NBC’s upcoming “Fashion Star” as she looked glam and put together in a liquid silver, paneled Julien McDonald dress with an exposed back. (And carrying her own House of Harlow bag.)

WireImage
HIT: Sofia Vergara - The sexy siren of "Modern Family" wore a strapless teal mermaid dress by Vera Wang that showed off her curves with elegance. She says she hit the gym for the first time ever to get ready for the Globes.

WireImage
HIT: Giluliana Rancic - The “E!” host looked glowing and beautiful in her black and white floral dress. Rancic came to the red carpet just a few weeks after her double mastectomy, so we’d say bravo to her even if she showed up in jeans and a T-shirt!

HIT: Octavia Spencer - Spencer told the Hollywood Reporter that she was having trouble finding a red carpet dress, as no designers wanted to help a “short, chubby girl.” So we’re doubly glad she found this Todashi Shoji flattering ruched lilac dress that ought to show the world all body types can be beautiful.

HIT: Ryan Seacrest - You can’t go wrong in a Burberry tux.

MISS: Kelly Osbourne - The "E!" host's Zac Posen dress was pretty, and her gray hair was rebellious. But together they added up to severe. Maybe she intended to come in costume as Helen Mirren?

HIT: Ariel Winter - In royal purple Dolce & Gabanna, Winter looked just like a young girl ready for a great party should look.
13/48

HIT: Katharine McPhee - McPhee looked utterly at ease and at home in a tea-length, strapless Donna Karan dress and perfectly soft, wavy hair. (Though the sky-high Laboutin platforms could not have been in any way comfy.)

IN THE MIDDLE: Nancy O’Dell - O’Dell looked perfectly nice in her nude color dress, but it was nothing to notice.
15/48
WireImage
MISS: Piper Perabo - She looked pretty and ethereal in Theyskens Theory, but appeared to be drowning in the yards of fabric.
16/48
WireImage
HIT: Ricky Gervais - Look, the red tux with the black lapel is on the ugly side, but he’s the prankster of the night and we love that his look suits him.
17/48
WireImage
MISS: Sarah Michelle Gellar - The "Ringer" star said she let her 2-year-old daughter pick out her sort-of spray painted Monique Lhullier dress, which is super sweet and a really good mother move. But she should probably hire a professional stylist for the next awards show.

HIT: Shailene Woody - The Best Supporting Actress in a Drama nominee looked divine in Marchesa.
19/48

HIT: George Clooney - Does the man ever look bad? (And Stacy Keibler just looks beautiful because she always looks happy. Yep, we would be, too.)
20/48
WireImage
HIT: Debra Messing - Loved the one-shoulder look on her, and the green earrings and updo. While we wish the bottom half of her black strapless dress had a little less fabric, the overall effect on the star of NBC’s upcoming “Smash” was still dramatic.

IN THE MIDDLE: Brooke Anderson - The orchid-colored strapless dress was fetching, but the combination of the heavy green earrings, cocktail ring and gemstone bracelets weighed it all down.
22/48

MISS: Zoey Deschanel: The “New Girl” was in custom Prada with a sort of digital lime-colored thing happening on the bodice, which was actually pretty interesting. But the Marlo Thomas “That Girl” hair flip was cloying and out of step with the modern (not mod!) dress.
23/48

HIT: Rooney Mara - Her simple, sexy black Nina Ricci was both innocent (tulle in the back) and dangerous (deep cleavage and side cut-outs). And the short tomboyish ponytail reminded us why she was there, her amazing performance in “Girl With a Dragon Tattoo.”
24/48
WireImage
HIT: Charlize Theron - In pale pink Dior, the star of “Young Adult” showed a lot of leg and sort of strange judgement with the vintage Cartier headband, but overall she looked lovely as always.
25/48
WireImage
MISS: Sharon Osbourne - Sharon, while your dining room was calling to ask for its curtains back, Dorothy was on the other line asking you to return the ruby slippers, too.
26/48
AP
HIT: Glenn Close - We can’t say we loved the sparkly windshield thing on Glenn Close’s Armani Privee dress, but the star of “Albert Nobbs” looked lovely just the same.

MISS: Nicole Kidman - Please step away from the BeDazzler.
28/48

HIT: Tina Fey - In a feathery Oscar de la Renta gown, the “30 Rock” star looked glamorous and at ease.
29/48
AP
HIT: Reese Witherspoon: Witherspoon keeps getting more and more bombshell with each awards show, here in a scarlet Zac Posen mermaid dress.
30/48
WireImage
HIT: Julianne Moore - Wearing a black Chanel Couture dress, Moore looked like she stepped out of the shower and on to the red carpet -- and we by that we mean she is a smooth, relaxed pro who knows how to get it right without trying to hard.

IN THE MIDDLE: Emma Stone: You had us at Lanvin. You had us at the plum. You had us at the red. You lost us at the eagle belt.
32/48
WireImage
MISS: Lea Michele - We usually love Lea Michele, and we usually love Marchesa. But this swirly, leafy cutout gown on the young Lea looked borderline showgirl.
33/48

HIT: Jessica Alba - Alba was beautiful in a strapless pale pink and gold Gucci with a delicate train.
34/48
WireImage
IN THE MIDDLE: Dianna Agron - Her bright red dress featured red “laser-cut swans,” which were not that beautiful, but were sort of cool. Points for a risk!
35/48
Getty Images
MISS: Jessica Biel - This Elie Saab dress was just too lacey for our tastes.
36/48
WireImage
MISS: Laura Linney - The star of “Downton Abbey” had a lot going on with what could have been a simple, elegant gown.
37/48
Getty Images
HIT: Viola Davis - That maroon gown with the slit up-to-here and the over-the-shoulder train down-to-there was a keeper.
38/48
WireImage
IN THE MIDDLE: Evan Rachel Wood wore a Gucci Premiere gown that was sparkly, feathery and moody. It was beautiful, but it wore her instead of the other way around.
39/48
Getty Images
HIT: Melissa McCarthy - In hunter green Badgley Mischka, “The Bridesmaids” star looked elegant.
40/48
Getty Images
HIT: Kate Winslet - Love that Winslet, winner of Best Actress in a Miniseries for “Mildred Pierce”, dared to wear a black on top and white on the bottom Jenny Packham dress when all conventional wisdom says curvy women should do otherwise.
41/48
WireImage
HIT: Madonna - Girlish and but also womanly in this Reem Acra gown, Madonna even donned a crucifix like the ones that once helped to make her famous, as she accepted the award for Best Original Song for “Masterpiece” in “W.E.”
42/48
Getty Images
HIT: Michelle Williams - Winner of the Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in “My Week with Marilyn” wore a purple Jason Wu dress that did bear a slight resemblance to a nightgown, but it was just so different from the rest of the Big Night Gowns on the red carpet, it made her stand out in a soft, quiet way. (P.S.: We know Charlize Theron did it too, but please no more headbands.)
43/48
AP
HIT: Laura Dern - Dern, who won Best Actress in a TV Musical or Comedy for her role on “Enlightened” looked lovely in sparkling emerald green. She wore long sleeves, one of the night’s big trends.
44/48
WireImage
HIT: Natalie Portman - In a deep pink Lanvin strapless dress with a berry-colored cuff, Portman looked bright and happy.
45/48
Getty Images
IN THE MIDDLE: Mila Kunis - The new face of Dior, Kunis wore this black Dior dress on the red carpet. Nothing wrong with it, just not too remarkable.
46/48
AP
MISS: Kyle Richards - “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star” looked harsh in a strapless red dress and gold, cage-like lattice choker. Also, why is she there?
47/48
Getty Images
HIT: Tilda Swinton - In a cool periwinkle, Tilda Swinton always wears something sculptural and intriguing.
48/48
WireImage
MISS: Salma Hayak - She usually looks great on the red carpet, but this sequined, geometric gown just seemed too heavy and unflattering.
