J.J. Abrams' Next Film Voyage Will Be “Star Trek 2.” Maybe.

And now, as you eagerly await “Super 8,” that thing you REALLY want to hear from J.J. Abrams.

“The next thing we're working on, and hopefully we'll be able to have some information on that sooner or later, is the next 'Star Trek,'” Abrams revealed over the weekend. He hasn’t yet officially decided if he’s going to be back in the director’s chair for the second voyage of the kinda-new, kinda-retro Enterprise crew, but he will be charting the course as “Star Trek 2’s” executive producer.

Although the “Trek” sequel has been slated for a June 29, 2012 release, Abrams says he’s less interested in meeting a release date than he is in crafting a worthwhile return to the 23rd Century. “I care much more that it be good than that it be ready,” he explains. “We're obviously doing everything that we can to make sure that schedules don't get screwed up, but I don't think anyone wants a movie on time that's not worth your time.”

He’s also not committing to shooting the film for a 3D release, despite the optical trend increasing ubiquitous use. “I'm not yet considering it,” he admits, “but I haven't gotten that threatening phone call from people in suits, like, '…If you know what's good for you...'”

Asked if the fact that, after the 2009 reboot of Gene Roddenberry’s 45-year-old sci-fi franchise, that nailing the screenplay has been tricky because the story potential is newly limitless, Abrams tells PopcornBiz that hasn’t been an issue.

“I don't think that's been any kind of hindrance or additional problem, but I certainly think that we want to make sure that it's done right,” he says. “The guys that we're working with [screenwriters Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindeloff] are obviously brilliant, and so I'm really excited to get back into it. Obviously, [“Super 8”] has been something that I've been working on pretty closely, and so it's been hard to find the leisure time to discuss Kirk and Spock.”
