Johnny Depp Riding Shotgun With “The Lone Ranger”

Is Tim Burton getting nervous about all the time Johnny Depp is spending with Gore Verbinski?

The rumors have come to fruition, as Verbinski will be directing a new film version of "The Lone Ranger," with Depp playing Tonto, reported Deadline.

It will be the duo's fifth film together. The pair has previously done three "Pirates of the Caribbean" films and the upcoming animated feature, "Rango," about a chameleon struggling with an existential crisis.

This project has been kicking around for a while now, and there have been rumors that George Clooney would play Ranger, but that ain't gonna happen. Jon Hamm is the obvious choice with whom to start the rumor mongering, noted The Playlist.

Unfortunately, the film is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Yes, it was Bruckheimer who brought Gore and Johnny together, but his latest films have left a long stretch of earth: "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," "G-Force" and "Confessions of a Shopaholic." Yikes.

Depp can next be seen alongside Angelina Jolie in "The Tourist," and "Rango" comes out March 4, 2011. Hopefully well get a release date for "The Rum Diary" someday soon...
