“Hateful”: GOP Leaders Slam Lawmaker's Immigration Remark

Rep. Steve King, the Republican congressman from Iowa, is no stranger to anti-immigration comments — but one he made in a recent interview is drawing outrage even from his own party's leadership. King had said in an interview with Newsmax, referring to the population of young undocumented immigrants in the U.S., "for every one who's a valedictorian, there's another 100 out there that weigh 130 pounds, and they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they're hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert." House Majority Leader Eric Cantor — who is working on a bill to offer a path to citizenship for immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children — called the remark "inexcusable," while House Speaker John Boehner called it "wrong" and "hateful." Democrats slammed it, too, with one calling it "beneath the dignity" of the House.
