Southern Baptists May Change Their Name

Forty percent of Americans have an unfavorable view of the Southern Baptist Convention, according to a survey by the denomination’s research foundation. The survey was commissioned to help leaders of the Protestant denomination decide whether to change its name, MSNBC reported. The church has been associated with polarizing political figures like the Rev. Jerry Falwell and TV evangelist Pat Robertson and SBC President Bryant Wright has said he worried the name might be too “regional.” Still, a majority of Americans viewed Southern Baptists favorably, the survey found. Negativity was highest with the “unchurched,” a problem for a denomination that makes proselytizing a priority.
