Polio Cripples Pakistan as Taliban Targets Health Workers

The battle to defeat polio in Pakistan is becoming more difficult due to the targeting of health workers by the Taliban and a belief among some Muslims that the disease is a Western conspiracy, NBC News reported. A quarter of a million children under five in the country are at risk of contracting the debilitating disease, which can lead to permanent paralysis. "It is an epidemic," said Dr. Altaf Bosan of the government's polio unit.
