New York City police are looking for a hit-and-run driver they say fled the scene Friday after a crash that killed a married couple in Far Rockaway.
The New Year’s Day crash claimed the lives of Thelma Reid, 60, and her husband, 57-year-old Donovan Gibbon.
It happened about 5 a.m. at the intersection of Ocean Crest Boulevard and Rockaway Freeway.
Police said a gray 2011 Dodge ram was speeding down Rockaway Freeway and crashed into a 2018 Nissan Rouge driven by the married couple.
The unidentified driver of the pickup fled the scene, police said, while two passengers of the pickup remained on scene. One was injured while another was taken into custody and charged with obstruction of “governmental administration” and disorderly conduct, police said in a news release.
The married couple were pronounced dead at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital.
Novia James, Gibbon's younger, said the crash occurred just blocks from their Far Rockaway home.

"You leave your house and you never know what could happen," James said. "You never see them without each other. Never. They were never apart.
The couple had been married eight years and were on their way to work at John F. Kennedy International Airport after Reid got called in.
