“The Man” Drops Criminal Charges Against Nate Dogg

Criminal charges were dismissed Wednesday against hip-hop artist Nate Dogg, who was accused of threatening and stalking his wife but suffered two major strokes last year and is recovering at a rehabilitation facility.

The 38-year-old singer, whose real name is Nathaniel Dwayne Hale, pleaded not guilty last July to two counts of making criminal threats and a single count of stalking -- all felonies -- along with a misdemeanor count of driving on a suspended license stemming from a prior DUI conviction.

The criminal threat charges stemmed from e-mails Hale allegedly sent his estranged spouse, while the stalking charge accused him of chasing the woman's car on the San Diego (405) Freeway in Carson last June, according to the District Attorney's Office.

At a court hearing Wednesday, Compton Superior Court Presiding Judge John J.Cheroske recommended that prosecutors drop the charges, and the District Attorney's Office agreed. The charges were dismissed without prejudice, meaning prosecutors can decide to refile the charges if he recovers.

A spokeswoman for the District Attorney's Office also said the alleged victim in the case has not responded to prosecutors' attempts to contact her.

Hale was arrested June 23 on the northbound 405 at Avalon Boulevard. According to the California Highway Patrol, the singer's spouse contacted the CHP's Los Angeles communications center via 911 to report that he "had made death threats against her, and was now following her vehicle as she traveled north on I-405."

"South Los Angeles CHP officers quickly moved to intercept the two parties, and stopped the victim and Mr. Hale," the CHP reported.

The rapper was released the next morning on bond.

Hale appeared in court last July in a wheelchair as a result of the first of two strokes he suffered. He suffered a second debilitating stroke two months later.
