Toddler Dies After Procedure at Austin Dental Clinic

A staffer said the child was there for a standard procedure that the clinic handles all the time

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the death of a 14-month-old girl after she underwent a dental procedure in Austin.

Autopsy results were pending on Daisy Lynn Torres. The Travis County Medical Examiner's Office said Daisy was declared dead Tuesday at an Austin hospital.

The procedure took place earlier Tuesday at Austin Children's Dentistry. Clinic spokeswoman Sarah Marshall said it's a tragedy and all thoughts and prayers are with the family.

A staffer said the child was there for a standard procedure that the clinic handles all the time, but didn't elaborate on what that procedure was. A family friend said the girl was there to have a cavity filled.

Staffers said a doctor and an anesthesiologist were in the room at the time but something went wrong. An ambulance rushed Torres to a nearby hospital, where she later died.

Rachel Robinson, a childhood friend of Torres' mother, Betty Squier, launched a crowdfunding page to help cover the costs associated with the child's funeral and burial.  Those wishing to donate can do so at YouCaring.com.

RIP sweet Daisy Lynn. Betty my heart is broken, and I can't even begin to imagine what you're feeling.

Marshall said officials with Austin Children's Dentistry await more information from the medical examiner's office. The medical examiner's office did not immediately return a message Thursday.

The Texas State Board of Dental Examiners has opened an investigation into the death.
