University of Dayton Basketball Player Dies Suddenly

A 20-year-old member of the University of Dayton men's basketball team died suddenly Thursday, school officials said.

Steve McElvene, a second-year student, died in his hometown of New Haven, Indiana. No other information about his death was made available.

Flyers coach Archie Miller said the team was "devastated" by the news.

"Any death is a tragedy, but for someone so young who worked so hard to have his dreams within reach, it's hard to put into words how painful this is," he said in a statement posted on the team's website.

McElvene, a 6-foot-11 redshirt freshman, averaged 6.1 points and 5.6 rebounds in 32 games last season. His 56 blocked shots set a Dayton single-season record.

He spoke last week to at-risk students at New Haven High School about how he was able to turn his life around, NBC affiliate WDTN reports.

Counseling and support services are available to students in the wake of McElvene's death.
