Olympic Viewing Guide: Track & Field Begins, Synchro Diving Wraps Up

Troy Dumais vies to be first U.S. male diver to make four Olympic teams.

The major U.S. Olympic trials are under way through July 2 in preparation for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Live coverage of many events can be found on the NBC Sports Network, and selected videos will appear on NBCSports.com. Here's what you should watch on Friday, June 22:

The event: Diving finals, men's 3m synchronized

When: 11 p.m. to 12 a.m. ET, NBC Sports Network

Where: Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.

Ones to watch: Three-time Olympian Troy Dumais, 32, also a 35-time national champion, will attempt to become the first U.S. male diver to make four Olympic teams. Going in to the final of the 3m synchro, he leads the pack along with his diving partner Kristian Ipsen. Dumais and Ipsen scored highest in the semifinals on a reverse 3 1/2 somersaults - the toughest dive on their list. Dumais, who has been suffering from strep throat throughout the trials, told NBC that he is taking nothing for granted. "It's always a push, you never know what to expect at this meet," he said. "Everybody is going for it. I imagine being behind the Chinese and having to push through."

What happens: Only the top team will be nominated to the U.S. Olympic team in the synchros.

The event: Track & field, women's 100m qualifying; men's 400m decathlon qualifying; men's 10,000m final; women's 10,000m final

When: 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network

Where: TrackTown USA in Eugene, Ore.

Ones to watch: Galen Rupp, the American 10,000 meter (or 10k) record-holder has exercise-induced asthma and severe allergies to pollens that can make it difficult for him to breathe. If he makes the Olympic team tonight in pollen-heavy Oregon, Rupp said he's not too worried about London because "the rain and stuff knocks everything out of the air." Rupp has had asthma since he was nine years old, so before each race his coach (1982 Boston Marathon winner) Alberto Salazar checks pollen count websites and ensures there is an epipen on hand in case of a severe attack. The runner broke the American record in the 10,000m last September when he recorded a time of 26 minutes and 48 seconds in Brussels.

What happens: The 10,000 meter race is equivalent to 6.214 miles. Competitors must complete 25 laps of the 400 meter track.
