GOP to Hold Connecticut Straw Poll

Voting is done online, and for a price.

The Connecticut Republican Party has decided to hold a presidential straw poll.

For a donation of $20 or more, people can vote in the straw poll online. The Straw Poll event will be held Jan. 20 in Bristol.

"This week's Iowa caucus proved that the race for the Republican nomination is very close," said State GOP Chairman Jerry Labriola, Jr. "The Connecticut Republican Party Straw Poll will offer the winning candidate the momentum necessary to lock up the northeast delegates."

Online voting opened Thursday, and will run through 8:30 p.m. Jan. 20. The results will be announced at 9 p.m. that night at the event at Nuchie's Restaurant in Bristol. The event runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will feature presentations from the candidates' campaigns, according the the Connecticut Republicans website.

The funds raised by the online voting will be used to support federal candidates and federal election activities, the website states. Contributions from state lobbyists and Connecticut state contractors are also accepted, according to the website.

By looking at the payment form, it appears voting is not limited to Republicans, or to Connecticut residents either.
