Online Smokers, the State Wants You

If you are one of the more than 900 Connecticut residents who bought cigarettes on the Internet without paying state sales tax, state officials are looking for you.

The Department of Revenue Services got your information from companies that sell smokes online, something federal law allows, and sent out sales tax bills to 928 people this week.

The cigarette sales in question happened between 2007 and 2008 and it could be a pretty big bill for someone with a big habit.

Connecticut’s cigarette tax jumped from $2 to $3 per pack on Oct. 1, as state officials sought to boost revenue because of the state budget deficit.

So much for trying to get around the second highest cigarette tax in the country. Rhode Island’s tax is highest at $3.46 per pack tax.
