Police Make Arrest in Brutal Bar Attack

A 38-year-old Hamden man is accused of a brutal attack in a local bar on Memorial Day.

Rodney Scalzo is accused of beating two people with a baseball bat inside Tasmanias Sports Bar, at 1537 Dixwell Avenue, on May 31.

Police were called around midnight and found two bar customers bleeding profusely from the head. One victim, a 34 year-old West Haven resident, was nearly unconscious, police said.

Police said Scalzo went into the bar and started arguing with one of the victims and punched the person. Another customer stepped in and pepper sprayed Scalzo.

Scalzo quickly left the bar and came back seconds later with a baseball bat and hit the man he previously assaulted several times in the head and face and attacked another customer, police said

Scalzo ran and police soon found him in a nearby adjacent parking lot and arrested Scalzo, police said.

Police have not identified the two victims. One was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital with a head injury.

Scalzo was charged with two counts of second-degree assault and disorderly conduct. Scalzo, who was detained on a $50,000 bond, is scheduled to appear in court in Meriden on June 11th.
