Announcement Coming About New Haven Pro-Tennis Tomorrow

On Thursday, we will learn something about the future of New Haven’s professional tennis tournament,

Pilot Pen announced in 2009 that it would drop its sponsorship of the professional summer tennis tournament held each year at Yale. The 2010 tournament was the last for the pen giant.

Tournament officials, New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr. and Yale University President Rick Levin will hold a news conference on Thursday and the New Haven Register reports that the announcement will be that tennis will be back next year “under a community umbrella.”

Pilot Pen began its relationship with the tournament in 1996, taking over for Volvo, which had been the title sponsor from 1990, when the event started in New Haven.

The tournament is part of the U.S. Open Series.
