Best Story at the Travelers

The big names have climbed to the top of the leaderboard after the weather-delayed round 2 at the Travelers Championship ended Saturday morning. Kenny Perry, David Toms, Ryan Moore and young gun Anthony Kim highlight the names making a run for the trophy.

And as exciting as it might be to see any of those premiere players win this weekend, there is a better story brewing here at the TPC at River Highlands.

Tyler Aldridge, 24, of Nampa, ID., has made the cut.

Who's Tyler Aldridge?  Who cares that he made the cut?

Those are good questions for golf fans to ask, and the answers are compelling ones.

Tyler Aldridge turned pro in 2004, when he was just 19.  His career earnings in those 5 years is a little less than $23,000.  He's made $15,511 on the Nationwide Tour, and he made $7,210 early this year at the Puerto Rico Open.  He finished that tournament tied for 66th, the only time he's ever made a cut on the PGA Tour.  That is, until today at the Travelers Championship.

I was nervous for him as he played his final holes of the second round. 3 under was the cut line this morning, and he was -3 through 15 holes, still facing 16 and 17, both holes where water can end your round, and any chances of a good score.  But he parred 16, then dug deep and birdied 17 and 18 to finish -5, two strokes better than the cut.

Making the cut for Tyler means he gets a paycheck for all his hard work.  Imagine putting in a 40-hour work-week only to be told at the end of the week, you aren't getting paid.  Well that's what happens for the PGA Tour pros who don't make the cut.  This week, Tyler's getting paid, and for a young father of two, that has to be a wonderful reward.
