Connecticut Golfers Happy Golf Returns to Olympics

Golf has returned to the Olympic stage for the first time in 112 years.

The sport was first played at the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris, but was removed in 1904.

Golfers and fans across Connecticut have been looking forward to the much anticipated return.

“It is incredibly exciting, obviously amazing for the game of golf because it is on such a global scale,” said Nathalie Filler, director of the Suzy Whaley Golf Camp at Tunxis Plantation Country Club in Farmington.

She said the young golfers in the program have been watching the Olympic Games all week during lunch and they are excited to take in the sport’s big return.

“I am really excited to watch it. I like watching all the players playing golf on TV to see what it is like,” said Libby Dunn, an 11-year-old from Berlin.

This is the eighth and final week of the Suzy Whaley Golf Camp. It offers kids 5-14 years old the opportunity to learn the basic skills they need to play.

It was started by Suzy Whaley, a professional golfer from Connecticut, who in 2003 became the first woman to qualify for a PGA Tour event in 58 years.
