Many young athletes have dreams of one day being on the field at Fenway Park.
On Monday, that dream came true for two teams from Connecticut, but they weren’t there to play baseball. Instead, they are playing hockey, a sport more befitting of the inches and inches of snow that fell over the weekend.
Avon Old Farms and Taft-Watertown are facing off at Fenway and the Courant reports that this is the first game on the ice that was created for the NHL’s Winter Classic.
Crews laid down the ice in the ballpark last week and thousands of New Englanders have taken advantage of the public skating at the Fens.
Only 500 tickets were sold for the private hockey event, and they seem to have sold out quickly, according to the Avon Old Farms Web site.
Avon Old Farms and Taft are private boarding schools that attract students from around the world, but nearly half the players on the ice Monday are from Connecticut.
The Courant reports that a parent of a player at Taft and an Avon Old Farms parent spent the $30,000 to hold the private event.
