Edsall Headed to Maryland

Just hours after UConn's first ever appearance in a BCS bowlHead Coach Randy Edsall was headed out of town and down to Maryland.

Edsall, who spent the past 12 years at UConn, has been hired as the new head coach at the University of Maryland, Kevin Anderson, director of athletics at Maryland announced on Sunday evening.

UConn tried to keep pace with an overpowering Oklahoma Sooners team in the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona Saturday, but couldn't produce an offensive touchdown, and lost the game 48-20.

Despite the loss, the fact that the Huskies were in a BCS bowl just ten years after joining the Division-1 ranks has made Edsall a top consideration from programs looking to fill vacant coaching positions. Edsall was in the mix last month when both the University of Miami and Pitt were looking for head coaches. Both teams ended up selecting others as their new coaches.

Edsall did not travel back Connecticut on the UConn charter flight Sunday. Instead, he and his family flew to Maryland to meet with school officials.

Maryland will hold a 2 p.m. news conference Monday to officially introduce Edsall as the new coach of the Terrapins.

NBC Connecticut Sports Director Kevin Nathan spoke to multiple sources close to Edsall who said the decision was not surprising.

"He wanted to wait until after the bowl game to talk to anyone," one source told Nathan.

"If he wasn't going to Penn State, Maryland would be the next best job, because it's close to Glenn Rock, Pennsylvania where he grew up," another source said.

There has been no word from UConn on the announcement.
