Hard Landing Knocks Bohonnon Out of the Running During Qualifying

Madison's Mac Bohonnon came to Pyeongchang hoping to improve on his fifth-place finish in the Sochi Games in 2014, but it wasn't to be.

Bohonnon took to the hill in the men's aerials on Saturday. After his two jumps, Bohonnon finished out of the top 12 and failed to qualify for the finals.

Bohonnon was considered a medal contender for the U.S. On his first jump, Bohonnon crashed on the landing. He landed too hard on his left ski. On his second jump, he executed the difficult back full- double full- full. However, on a day where the top six executed their jumps perfectly, it was not enough.

Bohonnon earned an 85.97 which landed him in the bottom four of qualifying.

It wasn’t all bad news for Team USA. Teammate Jonathon Lillis rose the occasion, executing a quadruple twisting triple back flip, a popular choice in the first round. He did it perfectly. He was rewarded with a score of 127.44. It ended up being the highest qualifying score of the night, so he will jump last in the final.

Bohonnon is one of three Olympic athletes from Madison to compete in Pyeongchang this year. Fellow Madison athlete and aerial skier Kiley McKinnon credits Bohonnon with getting her started in aerials.

McKinnon and Bohonnon were classmates in first grade in Madison, before Mac moved to Lake Placid to train.

He recruited Kiley and even though she had never done aerials before, she jumped at the opportunity.

McKinnon made the finals in her event, but fell short of a medal after landing too deep to advance to the second round. She finished 10th.
