NHL Last Night: Sharks Beat Kings 3-2 in Shootout

LOS ANGELES — Patrick Marleau tied the score with a short-handed goal before the San Jose Sharks topped the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 in a shootout on Monday to set an NHL mark for the best record through the first 30 games of the season.

Ryane Clowe scored a power-play goal in the first period and got the deciding goal in the shootout.

The Sharks improved to 25-3-2 with their 12th victory in 13 games and 19th in the past 22. The closest team in the Western Conference — the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings — fell eight points back after their 3-2 loss to Colorado.

Tomas Holmstrom and Marian Hossa scored for Detroit. Chris Osgood stopped 24 shots.

Hossa brought the Red Wings to within a goal 7:07 into the third period when he scored from the left circle off a face off won by Henrik Zetterberg. It was Hossa's 16th goal.

Leopold scored on a penalty shot 1:51 into the third for his fifth goal.

He put a backhand over Osgood's shoulder after the Red Wings' Brett Lebda was called for covering the puck in the crease.
