Nats Want You

Club hosting tryouts for Racing Presidents

In these tough economic times, the Nats are looking out for you, especially if you've got a giant, over-sized head.  The Nats are hosting tryouts next weekend (Feb. 15) for people who want to be a racing president.

If you've ever wanted to run around in a heavy, slightly damp and musty costume in front of tens of thousands of empty seats only to be booed because you beat out Teddy Roosevelt, then it's the job for you.

The presidents were all over DC this year, including marching in the inaugural parade, attending the balls, and mugging for pictures at the Easter Egg Roll.  If you're picked, you've got a chance to go all about town without having to worry about what to wear.

Last year, 120 people applied for the tryouts, and only 50 were accepted.  Of those, the Nats were only looking for between 12 and 20 racers.  It's likely that the number applying will be higher this season, so start practicing in your backyards -- just alert your neighbors so they don't think you're crazy.

If you're between 5'7" and 6'6" and can carry 45 pounds of foam while being able to run from right field to home plate faster than Dmitri Young would, you're on the right track.  To be picked, you'd have to be available for at least 40 percent of the Nats home games, which rules out Nick Johnson

Be prepared to not only run, but to show off your dance moves.  But beware: recreating the Fun Bunch with a gigantic head probably isn't as easy as you think it is.

If you're interested in trying out, send a cover letter, resume and a recent photo to entertainment@nationals.com.  The deadline for applying is Feb. 9 at 5 p.m.
