Local Rower Has Shots of Medal in Rio

Four rowers with Connecticut ties made it to the finals in their sports in the 2016 Rio Olympics and one is still in the running for a medal.

Austin Hack, of Old Lyme, is the only local rower who could medal. He and the rest of the men's eight team came in first on Thursday, propelling them into the finals on Saturday.

Hack's race is scheduled for 10:24 a.m. on Saturday. You can watch live online here.

Andrew Campbell Jr., of New Canaan, fell short of a medal on Friday when he and Josh Konieczny came in fifth in the lightweight double sculls. France took gold, Ireland took silver and Norway took bronze.

New Canaan native Charlie Cole rowed in the men's four on Thursday and came up two seconds shy of racing for a medal, but finished strong on Friday. His men's four team came in first in the Final B heat.

Former ESPN employee Meghan O'Leary rowed in the finals on Thursday, but came in sixth and did not medal.

She only started rowing six years ago after deciding to pick up the sport because it seemed like a common activity in New England. Little did she know then that a Google search for a place to row would lead her on a journey to compete in the Olympics.
