Schiavone, Kuznetsova Commit to New Haven Open

“Game, set, match” are terms Francesca Schiavone, World No. 8, and Svetlana Kuznetsova are used to hearing at the New Haven Open at Yale and all three will be back this year too, along with defending champion Caroline Wozniacki.

“Each year she has entered the New Haven Open, she has climbed the rankings – in 2008 she entered at No. 30 in the world, in 2009 at No. 9, 2010 at No. 2, and now in 2011 she is the top spot, according to the New Haven Open.

Wozniacki is the youngest singles player ranked in the top 10 in the world, according to her Web site,  and she comes in at the top spot this year.

Two other top 15 ranked players who will participate in the open include Grand Slam Champions Francesca Schiavone, World No. 8, and Svetlana Kuznetsova, World No. 12, according to the press release. Both women have a French Open title under their belt with Schiavone winning in 2009 and Kuznetsova winning in 2010.

One of the youngest players expected at the tournament is Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, number 13 in the world, who just turned 20 years old and is making her third appearance at the tournament in New Haven.

The cutoff for entry into the tournament was a ranking of 49.
