Olympic Canoe/Kayak Slalom: Day 3 Preview

Whitewater Stadium hosts the men’s canoe double (C2) and women’s kayak single (K1) slalom heats on Tuesday. Watch the stream of Day 3 canoe/kayak slalom heats beginning at 11:30 a.m. ET / 8:30 a.m. PT on NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Olympics app.

Men’s canoe double

It is difficult enough to paddle down a whitewater course single-handedly, let alone with two people in one boat. But that is what you will see on Monday in the canoe and kayak men's double slalom events.

The medal contenders

Anything can happen in the men's C2 event but here are the top four pairs with a shot at a medal: Germany's Franz Anton and Jan Benzien are the defending world champions in C2 and a favorite for gold. Czech Republic's Jonas Kaspar and Mark Sindler have two World Cup victories in 2015. American's Casey Eichfeld and Devan McEwan won gold in the men's C2 at the 2015 Pan American Games and are strong contenders for a medal.

However, Great Britain's David Florence – who placed third in the C1 heats on Sunday afternoon – and teammate Richard Hounslow won silver in the C2 in an extremely exciting race (below) at the London Games and were only .38 seconds behind the gold medalists and fellow countrymen Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott – who are not competing in Rio.

You can watch the stream of the men’s C2 semifinal and final on Thursday, August 11 beginning at 11:30 a.m. ET / 8:30 a.m. PT on NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Olympics app.

Women’s kayak single

Australia's Jessica Fox is the gold medal favorite in the women's K1; she is the reigning world champion and won silver at the London Games in the event.

Spain's Maialen Chourrant, Germany's Melanie Pfeifer are also medal contenders.

American Ashlee Nee has endured two previous failures at competing at the Olympics and is a dark horse in this event but has potential to win a medal.

You can watch the stream of the women’s K1 semifinal and final on Thursday, August 11 beginning at 11:30 a.m. ET / 8:30 a.m. PT on NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Olympics app.
