64-Year-Old Man, Players Arrested in JV Basketbrawl

Two players were arrested and a man hit a player, police say

In what could be called "basketbrawl," an Uncasville man and two basketball players were arrested last week after an altercation on the court at New London High School.

The disturbance was reported at 6:15 p.m. last Thursday during a game between the New London and Griswold JV boys basketball teams, the Norwich Bulletin reports. Two opposing players started arguing and it escalated into a fight, police said.

The coaches separated the players, but Robert Crawford, 64, came down from the stands and assaulted the New London player, police said.

Crawford was charged with third-degree assault, risk of injury to a minor and interfering with a police officer.

The New London player was charged with two counts third-degree assault and was released to a relative. The 17-year-old Griswold player was charged with breach of peace.

“We worked well with the New London administration, we were all on the same page, and out of a bad situation came a ‘teachable moment,’ ” said Griswold H.S. Athletic Director Glenn LaBossiere.
