Strong Showing by Connecticut Rowers in Rio Monday

Monday turned out to be a successful day in Rio for Olympic rowers with ties to Connecticut.

Andrew Campbell, Jr., of New Canaan rowed in the men's lightweight double sculls with his partner, Josh Konieczny. The duo finished second in their preliminary heat and finished 7th overall. That qualified them to move on to the semifinal heat.

In the men's four, Yale grad Charlie Cole and his fellow rowers qualified for the semifinals as well. They finished 3rd in their heat and 7th overall.

Old Lyme's Austin Hack hit the water Monday as part of Team USA's men's eight squad. The team finished 4th overall and have been relegated to the repechage on Wednesday, giving the team another chance to advance to the finals, which will be held on Saturday.

Monday was a last chance for Meghan O'Leary in the women's double sculls to keep her medal hopes alive. O'Leary, who began her rowing career while working at ESPN in Bristol, and her partner, Ellen Tomek, were forced to row in Monday's repechage after failing to qualify for the semifinals on Saturday. The duo finished second in their repechage and will move on to the semifinals.
