UConn Close to Naming New Head Coach

UConn may be close to naming former University of Miami offensive coordinator Mark Whipple to take over as Head Coach of the Huskies football team.

A UConn athletic department official says the school is in the final stages of negotiation with Whipple to lead the team, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.

Sources also tell NBC Connecticut sports director Kevin Nathan Whipple is the leading candidate for the job to replace Randy Edsall, who left for the University of Maryland head coaching position last week.

Whipple, 53, was released from the University of Miami after the Hurricanes' head coach was fired last month. He has coached at the University of New Haven and led UMass to a 1-AA championship in 1998.

The UConn official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Associated Press no announcement would be made before Thursday.
