The Huskies cruised to 81-48 victory over Central Connecticut on Sunday to run their winning streak to two games. UConn is now 6-4 on the season and the backcourt around Ryan Boatright seems to be taking shape.
Boatright, who scored 18 points, continues to play like one of the best point guards in the country. Meanwhile, guard Rodney Purvis added 14 and Omar Calhoun was good for 11.
“I’m starting to get my rhythm back," Calhoun said, via UConnHuskies.com. "I’m starting to get healthy. I’m able to be more explosive at the rim, do more off the dribble.” In the frontcourt, Kentan Facey logged a double-double (the first of his career) with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
“I feel like for me personally I’m getting more comfortable and I think everyone else is getting more comfortable feeling their way around with the offense," Facey said. "I think we’re starting to click as a team.”
UConn led by 12 at the break but started the second half with a 22-2 run.
"Coach got on us during one of the time outs, and I got on us during one of the huddles," Boatright explained. "We just picked it. I think it just took everybody a while to get into it but once we did, we kept it rolling.”
UConn held Central Connecticut to 32 percent shooting from the floor, including 28 percent in the second half. The Huskies also dominated on the boards, 42-28.
“Our defense was stellar," coach Kevin Ollie said. "It started off slow, but in the last 10 minutes of the first half they had one field goal, and then we came out in the first seven minutes of the second half and didn’t allow them to score. So in the span of 17 minutes we held them to one field goal. That’s tremendous defense, and I thought that got us going. I thought it stepped up big time, especially in the second half. That was probably the best I’ve seen our pressure.”
